Swat the Math Fly
One of our favorite math skills games to play is Swat the Math Fly. On the board there are the numbers 0-15. One student calls out a number while the other student quickly finds the number. Once the number is found, the student has to quickly smash the number with a fly swatter.

Hands on Experiences
Today we focused on reviewing numbers. Yes, you may think this is easy but we really go into depth with the numbers. Students have to use manipulatives and practice counting. They have to come up with different ways to count objects (by 1's, 5's, or 10's), recognize numbers, match groups of objects to numbers, draw objects for correct numbers, and so much more. I am so proud of all their hard work already this year. Enjoy some of our hands on experiences in math.
Students had to count the number of dots on the dice and record them in their math workbooks.

We practiced taking turns with our partners.

Students helped each other. We talked about how we figured out what number we were going to record. Some students said that they counted the dots to figure out how many were on the dice. Some students said they looked at the way the dots were grouped to count the numbers fast. Way to go!!

We love having fun in math! Ms. Hawas plays notes on the guitar. However many notes are played is how many cubes students have to pull out from the middle of the table. They love this game. (I can't actually play the guitar shhhhh)

One partner says a number and the other partner has to slide that many cubes their way. This is a great game to check if students know how to answer the question "how many?" Try this at home using every day objects.

Math Skills and How YOU Can Help
*Name numbers 0-10 /counts orally1-25: You can help your child learn their numbers by going on a hunt for numbers, drawing them in the air, making them in the sand, or ask your child to name the numbers on your phone.
*Match numbers with groups of objects: You can help your child match numbers with groups of objects by having objects in your house in a pile and asking them to put a certain number in another pile, count how many trees they see outside, or play an "I spy" game (I spy three spoons. Can you tell me where they are?).
*Names colors: You can help your child name their colors by playing an "I spy" game (I spy a red toy), everyday ask them what color shirt they are wearing, or using colors ask them to color with a certain color.
*Can accurately answer the question "How Many?": You can help your child with this skill by showing them a group of objects and asking them to count the objects. Show your child 5 crayons. Ask your child to count the crayons. Ask your child "how many crayons did you count?" *Place numbers in order 0-10: Write the numbers 0-10 on 11 different post it notes. Mix up the post it notes. Ask your child to put them in order.

  4. Yay! Michael loves singing during calendar math. I'm so happy he has fun while learning. You'll have to ask him if he can sing some songs for you. :)

  5. Singing is a huge part of our life lol He responds better when I sing to him -- even when doing chores or waking up... and yes I do ask him if he learned any songs in school and he would belt out and sing :-D Thank you for making it fun for him!
